The Tongji Sino-Italian Strategic Advisory Board was established in May 2012 and plays a key role in promoting strategic cooperation, mutual assistance and joint development between Chinese and Italian institutions and enterprises and Tongji University. It aims to build the highest level of international decision-making and advisory body for Tongji Sino-Italian cooperation by the consultation between Chinese and Italian experts, integration of advantages of resources and active decision-making, intellectual and social support. At present, Board members include 20 well-known Italian and Chinese enterprises such as IGuzzini Lighting, Shanghai Sany Technology and Technogym etc. Each year, the Board members provide professional advice, scholarships and internships to support the development of Tongji's cooperation with Italy.

On 24 May 2012, the Tongji Sino-Italian Strategic Advisory Board was officially established, with more than 30 Sino-Italian partners joining as Board members.
On 30 June 2012, Francesco Profumo, then Italian Minister of Education, University and Research, attended the first conference of the Tongji Sino-Italian Strategic Advisory Board.
On 18 November 2013, Maria Chiara Carrozza, then Italian Minister of Education, University and Research, attended a meeting with Italian and Chinese companies and launched the "Sino-Italian Human Resources Database".
On 14 November 2015, Stefania Giannini, former Italian Minister of Education, University and Research, visited Tongji University and attended the 5th conference of the Tongji Sino-Italian Strategic Advisory Board.
