The cooperation has entered into a new phase of high-speed healthy development in the 21st century with the signing of the Joint Communiqué on Educational Cooperation by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Education, University and Research of Italy, and the inauguration of the Sino-Italian Campus of Tongji University (TJSIC), with the support and personal attendance of the then Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi.
