Release date:2025-06-24

Based on two decades of deep-rooted cooperation with Italy, Tongji University has recently received official approval from the Ministry of Education to establish the Sino-Italian College of Engineering and Innovation. The new college will offer three distinctive master's degree programs, marking a significant step forward in cultivating outstanding engineering innovation talents for the future. It’s the newest of four Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools of Tongji University to date.

In response to the emerging global challenges and opportunities brought by sustainable development and artificial intelligence, Tongji University and Politecnico di Torino—one of Europe’s leading institutions in science and engineering, have jointly established the Sino-Italian College of Engineering and Innovation of Tongji University. Leveraging the strengths of both universities in interdisciplinary education, industry-academia integration and international cooperation, particularly in the fields of design, environment science and engineering, electronics and information science, the college pioneers a model of “AI+, Green+, Design+”, aiming to cultivate outstanding engineering innovation talents with a strong foundation in “science, technology, engineering, art, and global competence”. The two universities are committed to build the college into a high-level, sustainable and strong cooperation model of localized international education in China, as well as a flagship initiative in the 2.0 Strategy for China-Italy Cooperation at Tongji University.

The Sino-Italian College of Engineering and Innovation of Tongji University brings together the high quality resources of Tongji University and Politecnico di Torino, and offers three master's degree programs: Systemic Design and Intelligent Innovation (Mechanical Engineering), focusing on the development of AI-driven creative tools design and intelligent interaction and robots design, this track aims to establish a new paradigm for human-machine collaborative design; Climate Change and Carbon Neutrality (Resources and Environment Engineering), focusing on the construction of integrated innovation system across the full chain of “carbon accounting, low carbon technology, zero carbon application”, which targets key technologies such as carbon capture and storage, industrial process optimization and climate resilient urban design; Information, Communication, and Embodied AI (Electronic Information Engineering), Combining advanced technologies in communication, control, and microelectronics to develop comprehensive perception - transmission - computation solutions and equipment for intelligent society of the future.

The Sino-Italian College of Engineering and Innovation of Tongji University integrates the core curricula of Politecnico di Torino, high-level faculty team, Turin industrial cluster and Sino-Italian-European resources for industry-education collaboration. It works closely with the National College of Elite Engineers (International College of Elite Engineers) of Tongji University, with key platforms such as the State Key Laboratory of Water Pollution Control and Green Resource Recycling, and the State Key Laboratory of Autonomous Intelligent Unmanned Systems (Tongji University), etc., to jointly build an open and shared platform for international education and practice.

In terms of professional curriculum, Tongji University and Politecnico di Torino jointly design training programs, and students are encouraged to take cross-disciplinary courses in a bilingual teaching environment and deeply participate in cutting-edge international research projects. The faculty team consists of academicians, IEEE Fellows, national talents, and senior industrial experts from both universities, creating a diverse and globally academic team.

During the study period, students may choose to participate in exchange programs at Politecnico di Torino or other international mobility opportunities. Qualified graduates will receive the diploma, master's degree certificate of Tongji University and degree certificate of Politecnico di Torino. After graduation, they may also pursue further studies at domestic or abroad. Graduates who have been admitted to the doctoral program of Tongji University are eligible to join the Sino-Italian Dual PHD Program.
